British Waterways announces 2004 licence fees
British Waterways' licence fees for 2004/5 are to rise by 2.5% - with a £10 discount for many boaters.
The new fees, which apply to boaters buying or renewing a licence between April 2004 and March 2005, are the first to be calculated using a new method. British Waterways has devised its own inflation measurement, based on the costs involved in running canals and rivers - but with a further 0.5% discount to encourage efficiency in the organisation.
In addition, many boaters who held an annual licence last year will be eligible for a special £10 deduction this year. British Waterways says this is a "goodwill gesture" in recognition of the long delays many boaters suffered trying to renew their licences last year, caused by the installation of a new computer system.
The £10 discount will automatically be included in renewal notices. It applies to people with a 12-month licence expiring between 30 April and 31 July 2004, who purchased their previous licence after 15 March 2003.
New fees for British Waterways' moorings are also being set. These include many bankside moorings and several marinas. Every BW mooring-holder will receive a letter in the first half of January listing the rates to apply from 1 April.
