Pub partnership steaming ahead

22nd Aug 2005

Boaters and walkers on the Erewash Canal can now enjoy good food and good beer, thanks to a second pub from the Waterside Pub Partnership.

The second pub to undergo refurbishment following the launch of British Waterways’ partnership with Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises has opened at Trent Lock on the Erewash Canal. The Steamboat Inn, which had laid dormant for over a year prior to its acquisition by the Waterside Pub Partnership in July, opened its doors to boaters and towpath visitors on 11 August 2005.

Following a £120k refurbishment of the Steamboat Inn, the new lessees John and Rose Deakin are focusing on serving fresh homemade food and good beers to some of the 8,000 visitors who already visit the popular Nottinghamshire attraction each month.

John Deakin comments: "We have four cask ales; Theakston Best Bitter, Marston’s Pedigree, Courage Directors and Charles Wells Bombardier Bitter on tap. We also have a range of draught premium lagers, including the new Russian lager Baltika and Kronenbourg Blanc. We’d be delighted to serve some refreshment to boaters who can stop off at the 48-hour visitor moorings just past the Lock."

The Steamboat Inn is a comfortable three day cruise from the Foxton Locks Inn, the Waterside Pub Partnership’s first pub to open on the Grand Union Leicester Line. Since opening in May the Foxton Locks Inn has been a popular attraction with sales over 50% up on projections.

Peter Wear, British Waterways’ head of the Waterside Pub Partnership comments: "We are delighted to have opened our second pub since forming the partnership with Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises.

"Profits from the groundbreaking partnership will directly contribute to the care and upkeep of the nation’s 200-year old canals and rivers. The Waterside Pub Partnership will provide a valuable source of income for the nation’s waterways and is helping to attract more people to popular canalside sites across the network."

A second phase of refurbishment at the Steamboat Inn is planned for later in the year. This will focus on the function room space downstairs.
