Brynich Lock is best in Wales

30th Aug 2005

Brynich Lock, near Brecon, on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is the Best in Wales, according to the 2005 Lock & Bridge Awards held recently by British Waterways.

It picked up one of just eight awards for the entire UK, thanks to the efforts of British Waterways staff Rhodri Bowen, Alan Gardner, Kevin Phillips, Malcolm Prosser, Mark Prosser and Emyr Williams.

This hard-working team made sure Brynich Lock was in tip-top condition for the judges’ visit. With safety of paramount importance, a non-slip surface was fitted to the footbridge over the lock, additional safety rails were installed and mooring bollards were relocated. Various parts of the lock were repainted using environmentally-friendly, water-based paints, and visitor information around the lock was improved. Neatly-trimmed grass, carefully-tended borders and colourful hanging baskets further enhanced the surroundings.

And it’s not the first time that Brynich Lock has been a winner. This historic feature of the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal has picked up a prize in this competition on two previous occasions.

The team will collect their award and prize money at a ceremony in October.

Designed to promote and encourage interest in the safety, maintenance, appearance and environmental value of canals and rivers, this annual competition is open to British Waterways employees throughout the UK. It recognises that the people working on the canal play a crucial role in enhancing their local waterway and improving customer service.

The judges examine the locks and bridges in great detail and take into account how each site is managed in terms of safety and the environment.

British Waterways, Wales & Border Counties Supervisor, Kevin Phillips, said his team were thrilled to have won this award.

"We feel very proud that Brynich Lock is the Best in Wales. Now, of course, we aim to keep that title next year.

"It’s been a real labour of love, getting the Lock ready for the competition. And it’s rewarding to see so many visitors enjoying this area of the canal, after a gentle 2-mile (3.3 km) stroll from Brecon," he added.
