Standedge's international fans
Standedge Tunnel – the highest, longest, and deepest canal tunnel in the country – is to host a special visit next month (October) by a group of American canal enthusiasts.
The group comprises around 30 canal engineers, historians and enthusiasts from the Erie Canal in the USA who are on a three week tour of Britain’s waterways starting in the South and finishing in Scotland. They have made a special request to visit the attraction on Huddersfield’s Narrow Canal and experience a trip by electric boat into the tunnel.
The Leader of the group, Professor Tom Grasso, who is president of the Canal Society of New York State, and Inland Waterways International, said: “Everyone in our group is looking forward to the trip. We are all avid waterways enthusiasts, even though some of us are now retired.
“Visiting Britain’s waterways is an exciting opportunity to see the country’s important canal heritage, and Standedge Tunnel is famous as an engineering feat in its own right.”
While they are in the UK, the group will be including a visit to the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester, as well as the Anderton Lift and Falkirk Wheel.
