Prestigious award for Keadby Lock
British Waterways (BW) will be presented with a prestigious national award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London later this month, in recognition of a £1.4m project to stabilise Keadby Lock in South Yorkshire.
Laurence Morgan, General Manager, British Waterways Yorkshire, will receive the Brunel award with the project manager and representatives from the contractors, Galliford and Cementation Skanska at the ICE headquarters, in London on 25th October.
Keadby Lock, on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation, is both Grade II listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, giving it the same level of protection as that of Stonehenge. British Waterways ranks third in the UK in terms of ownership of listed buildings.
The works, which were completed on time and within budget, were undertaken as part of BW’s safety programme and were essential to stabilise the structure of the lock and prevent its collapse. The total cost of the project was around £1.4m.
Laurence Morgan, general manager of BW Yorkshire, commented: “The lock was stabilised by building a reinforced concrete cradle around the lock, and then stitching back the existing chamber to the new structure. The process of undertaking this work was extremely complex and involved the development of a stage by stage approach with the contractors to ensure that the structure of the existing lock was not compromised.
“Before we could begin works to the lock we had to obtain consent from the Department for Culture Media and Sport and also worked closely with English Heritage who are also helping us with our proposals to mechanise the lock in the near future.”
