New bed for Huddersfield Narrow
A fundamental £1.3 million refurbishment to the Scout embankment near Mossley on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal has begun.
British Waterways has appointed Galliford Try Construction as contractor to carry out the remediation works which will be completed by the end of March 2006.
The major repair works include strengthening the canal with the installation of a new canal bed lining, rebuilding and constructing of new canal washwalls. Additional works include upgrades to towpaths and removing overgrown vegetation.
The work will mean temporarily closing the canal to navigation and towpath between locks 8 and 12 west at Mossley until March 2006.
John Ackroyd, Senior Project Engineer, British Waterways, said: "This is essential work we need to carry out during our winter maintenance programme to preserve this section of the canal for another 100 years. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is well used by boaters, cyclists and walkers and these improvements will enhance the canal and environment for many years."
