Canals bring colour to Barby

30th Nov 2005

Children from Barby Primary School will bring a splash of canal-themed colour to the trees around their school on Friday 2nd December.

With the help of the Northamptonshire Canal Partnership and rangers from Daventry Country Park, the children will be creating some colourful waterways-themed decorations and bird food cakes to hang on the trees.

The week from 23 November – 4 December is National Tree Week, which marks the start of the tree planting season. The event also ties in with National Tree Dressing Day, which takes place on 4th December and encourages people to celebrate the beauty of trees.

Jo Neill, Northamptonshire Canal Partnership Co-ordinator, who will be helping the children, said: "Canals and rivers are important green corridors that connect the countryside with our towns and cities, providing a haven for wildlife. Trees are a vital part of our waterways environment.

"The picturesque Oxford Canal runs close to Barby village, so this is a good opportunity to have some fun with the children while making the link between the canal, our trees and wildlife."

The Northamptonshire Canal Partnership is a working relationship between South Northants Council, Daventry District Council, Northampton Borough Council and British Waterways. The Partnership aims to conserve and enhance the inland waterways in our county for the benefit of visitors and local communities.
