Timber yard transformed in Hackney

6th Dec 2005

A disused timber yard on the Regent's Canal in Hackney is to be transformed into a mixed-use site boasting residential housing and a canalside restaurant.

The £5.3m scheme will be undertaken by H20 Urban Ltd, the joint venture between British Waterways London and bloc. The project was granted formal planning permission in August and has been pre sold to Young Property and North British Housing.

Plans for the former timber yard include 25 residential units, 25 per cent affordable housing and a canalside restaurant.

Stuart Mills, British Waterways’ head of property, says:

"We are delighted this project is underway and a site that has been under-used for so long can now be transformed to bring new homes to Hackney and improve access to the canal. H2O Urban's unique approach to waterside development will ensure that the adjacent waterspace is an integral part of the scheme rather than just an attractive backdrop and all profits made by British Waterways will be reinvested in the upkeep of its canals, rivers and docks."

Building contractors Rackham Construction Ltd are on site and work is due to be completed in Spring 2007.
