Severe weather advice for boaters
We are currently enjoying reasonable weather conditions for the time of year. However, in case this changes, British Waterways have put together the following advice for boat owners.
Changing weather conditions
Current weather forecasts are indicating that whilst there is no immediate danger of very severe weather, longer term forecasts are suggesting either:
1. A prolonged period of cold, dry weather, with the possibility of the canals being frozen for a significant period of time
2. A period of warm, wet weather resulting in flooding of rivers or even canals
Boat owners are advised to be aware of changing conditions and prepare for any change according to published advice.
In the event of very severe weather, BW may advise boaters, particularly Continuous Cruisers, to move to a number of locations where water and pump out facilities can be provided. This is not currently necessary, and Continuous Cruisers are expected to cruise as normal.
Flood conditions
At times of flood, boat owners are advised to find a safe mooring. River levels can change very quickly. Please look out for flood warning notices and avoid travel if flooding is indicated.
In the South West, river locks will be left open at Bath and Gloucester to allow boats to travel from the rivers to the canals but passage will not be allowed onto the river. In very extreme flood conditions Gloucester Lock gates will be closed. Please contact the Lock Keeper for information (01452 310832).
Water and pump out in freezing conditions
On BW sites, water pipes are generally 600mm below ground level and lagged, and in most circumstances will not freeze. Please telephone Freefone Canals (0800 47 999 47) to alert BW to any problems and plan ahead by keeping your own supplies of drinking water on board.
Some pipes on pontoons at BW sites may freeze but measures are currently being put in place to deal with this issue.
Please ensure your boat is pumped out regularly to avoid problems if you are iced in.
GRP cruisers & wooden boats
GRP cruisers and wooden boats may benefit from removal from the water if very severe weather is probable and the waterway is likely to freeze.
Please take advice from local operators and make your own arrangements to remove your boat to safe winter storage.
