Rochdale Canal temporarily closed

4th Jul 2006

The Rochdale Canal has been temporarily closed between locks 11 and 12 (near Hebden Bridge) and between locks 18 and 19 (at Todmorden) following flash flooding on 2 July 2006.

Earth, boulders and cobbles were washed down the hillside blocking a short section of canal between locks 11 and 12, whilst sections of a 40 metre embankment between locks 18 and 19 also slipped into the canal following heavy rain.

British Waterways engineers are currently at both sites assessing the scale of the damage and the quickest way to reopen the canal.
