Try Roses and Castles at Standedge

3rd Aug 2006

Visitors to Standedge Visitor Centre, near Marsden, Huddersfield can take part in one of two workshops being organised to learn the traditional narrowboat painting art known as Roses and Castles on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August.

The bright, colourful designs are traditionally used and readily recognisable on narrowboats, watering cans and chairs but no-one knows the exact origin of the art.

The free sessions, from 12 noon until 4pm, will be taken by experienced canalware painter, Ellen Levin who has already held two successful workshops at the Centre in July. Those taking part will practice painting on paper plates before transferring their skills to a spoon, necklace or flower pot which they will be able to take away with them.

Numbers are limited to twenty on a strictly first come, first served basis and children need to be accompanied by an adult. Further information is available by telephoning 01484 844298.

Guided boat trips into the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country are also available over the weekend. The trips last around 30 minutes and run at 10.15am, 11am, 11.45am, 1pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.15pm and 4pm. Prices for guided boat tickets: Adults £4, Child (5-15) £3, Concessions £3.50, Under 5s free.
