Three counties boost Grand Union Canal

11th Aug 2006

A new canal partnership is aiming to make the most of the economic, social and environmental potential of the Grand Union Canal and the land around it in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

The Three Counties Canal Partnership, which brings together British Waterways South East and eight county, district and borough councils in the region, is working together to protect and improve the built and physical heritage of the 80 kilometres of canal which passes through the counties, for the benefit of the wider environment and the general public.

One of the Partnership’s first tasks has been a consultation exercise. Karen Fishwick, Economic & Social Development Co-ordinator for British Waterways South East, said: "Over 100 questionnaires were sent out in June to organisations and individuals, in order to establish canal and towpath usage and also to identify ideas people would like pursued.

"We have had more than 50 responses, which are being used in the preparation of an Action Plan. This draft Action Plan has had a further round of consultation to establish a priority list, however it is not too late to make comments. Unfortunately, the Partnership can’t guarantee to implement every suggestion and many ideas will be dependent on securing external funding."

For further details, visit the Three Counties Canal Partnership’s website. If you would like to suggest projects, put forward ideas, volunteer to help or simply want to be included on the mailing list, either contact the Partnership via the website or e-mail Karen Fishwick at karen.fishwick@britishwaterways.co.uk.
