Cotswold Canals exhibition on display in the park
Running until the 28 August an exhibition entitled 'Restoring the Cotswold Canals' will be on display at the Museum in the Park, Stroud. Attracting nearly 500 visitors in its first week, the display outlines the Cotswold Canals Partnership’s suggested restoration plans and all are welcome to come and take a look.
It is a chance for local people to find out more about the Cotswold Canals project and feedback their views to the Partnership. It is essentially an introduction to the project presented as answers to frequently asked questions such as ‘when will it happen?’ and ‘what will it look like?’.
The exhibition will also include a photography project undertaken by life-long learning students at Stroud College and information on a project to record ‘living memories’ of the canal for an interactive DVD – if people have any canal memories they would like to share they can get in touch with the partnership on 01452 318500.
The restoration of the Cotswold Canals is a major first step in reconnecting England’s two greatest rivers; the Thames and the Severn. The restoration of the canals will provide opportunities for all by acting as a catalyst for continuing social, economic and environmental regeneration whilst safe-guarding their future for everyone to enjoy.
Benefits of the restoration include encouraging greater community cohesion, conservation and enhancement of the landscape and wildlife, attracting inward investment as well as providing a wide corridor for leisure and tourism.
James Blockley, community links involvement coordinator, working on behalf of the Cotswold Canals Partnership said; "This is a great opportunity for people to come and see what the project is all about. The plans are not carved in stone, so it is essential to find out what the local community thinks if the restored canal is to have a future. As well as having the exhibition we will also be holding specific drop in sessions where a member of the Partnership will be available to answer any specific questions or help with information requests. The drop in days will be on Thursday 10, Monday 14, Saturday 19 and Thursday 24 August from 10am - 4pm."
The Museum is open seven days a week, however the display will be closed to the public on certain days. Please call the Museum on 01453 763394 to avoid disappointment.
