Free angling coaching in London

15th Aug 2006

The environmental charity Thames21 is marking National Fishing Week by offering four free angling coaching sessions in London for young people in Hackney, Ladbroke Grove, Rotherhithe and Thamesmead.

Thames21 runs free angling coaching events as part of the Thames21 Angling Development Project. The charity set up the project in 2004 to tackle anti social behaviour and encourage young people to become stewards of their local waterways.

Thames21's Angling Development Coordinator Grant Fear said: "We set up Thames21 Tightlines to capture young people’s interest in their local canal and transform it into something positive.

"Thames21 work with communities across London’s canal network and a recurring problem we encounter are young people using the canals in the wrong way for the wrong reasons, even making some areas feel threatening to the public. The Tightlines project turns young people into young anglers with new skills and a reason to care for and respect their local patch of canal."

Young people are encouraged to turn up on the day with professional coaching, equipment and bait provided by Thames21. For those who decide they want more than a taster session, Thames21 will link participants up with local angling clubs.
