Youngsters test their paddle power

22nd Aug 2006

Youngsters in Walsall have been given the chance to test their paddle power this summer at the British Waterways’ Brownhills Canoe and Outdoor Centre.

Children have been taking to the Wyrley & Essington Canal as part of the Ready Steady Summer Scheme in partnership with Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council. By the end of the school holidays it is expected that more than 70 children will have taken part in the free sessions, which offer a first insight into canoeing. They receive a qualification in canoeing once they have completed the training course.

Canoe centre manager Paul Lester said he is delighted to be involved in the scheme:

"The Paddle Power development course is a great way to promote canoeing in the Brownhills area. It instils an inner confidence and passion for canals and physical activity. The children have had great fun and who knows, those who take part in these canoeing sessions now might be the Olympic stars of the future."

The Brownhills Canoe and Outdoor Centre was funded by British Waterways, in partnership with the British Canoe Union, Brownhills Community Association, the European Regional Development Fund, Sport England, Big Lottery Fund, Walsall Canoe Club and Walsall Council. It opened in June after three years in the planning.
