Bridge design competition for Tottenham

15th Sep 2006

British Waterways has launched a competition to design and build a new pedestrian bridge over the River Lee Navigation in Tottenham.

The £2.5million project is funded by a Growth Areas Grant from the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) and supported by the Tottenham Urban Centre Masterplan. It will create a key link between proposed new waterfront housing, shops and restaurants at Hale Wharf and Tottenham Hale underground and rail station.

Six teams of bridge designers and builders with proven track records in delivering high quality civil engineering projects have been selected to work up designs. Local people will have the chance to give their views on the designs at a public exhibition at The Welbourne Centre, Chesnut Road on Thursday 9 November and during a series of school workshops. The designs will then be assessed by a panel of representatives from British Waterways, CABE, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, Greater London Authority and the London Borough of Haringey as well as industry experts.

Richard Rutter, British Waterways’ regeneration manager for London, explains: "This project gives us and local people a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of Tottenham and to breathe new life into its waterside. We look forward to seeing the design proposals for the new bridge from our six contenders and we hope as many people as possible will come along to our public exhibition."

The winner will be announced late November and the project will get underway in the new year, with a completion target of March 2008.
