New Board members for British Waterways

Waterways Minister Barry Gardiner has appointed three new members with specialist expertise in property and fair trading law to the Board of British Waterways.

Waterways Minister Barry Gardiner has appointed three new members with specialist expertise in property and fair trading law to the Board of British Waterways.

Nigel Hugill, Chief Executive of Communities and Development, Lend Lease Corporation and a former managing Director of Chelsfield; John Bywater, currently Managing Director of Hammerson (UK) and John Bridgeman, a former Director General of the Office of Fair Trading and member of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission, will become part-time, non-executive Board members.

All appointments are for three years. John Bridgeman and Nigel Hugill will begin their terms on 25 September 2006, John Bywater in February 2007.

New investment for the waterways

Barry Gardiner said: "I am delighted to make these appointments. Our waterways have seen a renaissance over the past six years and are delivering real social, economic and environmental benefits. New investment has been brought to the waterways through innovative partnerships in property development, telecommunications and with the leisure industry.

"These new members will bring valuable specialist experience to the British Waterways Board and help it to increase its income as it regenerates our urban and rural waterways."

Scottish Ministers have appointed Duncan Sutherland to the Board. Mr Sutherland’s specialism is also in property.
