Towpath tidy 2007 a great success

20th Apr 2007

This year’s towpath tidy achieved a record result with 152 tonnes of rubbish removed from the waterways, up from 147 tonnes in 2006 and 121 tonnes in 2005.

Some 585 external volunteers joined 394 predominantly office based staff to spring clean the waterways ahead of the main visitor and boating season. They covered 180 miles of towpath clearing the usual array of crisp packets, drink cans and plastic bags along with a staggering 123 shopping trolleys.

Robin Evans, chief executive, commented: "I am very pleased that so many external volunteers joined forces with BW members of staff to put something back into their local waterway.

"The annual Towpath Tidy brings important benefits to canal wildlife as well as making the waterways more attractive places to spend time."
