Image for Basildon Park

Built in 1776 - 1783 by John Carr for Francis Sykes, this charming house still boasts its original, elegant plasterwork and graceful staircase. This is remarkable as it has faced years of neglect and decay. It was even believed that it would be torn down after the Second World War.

Lord and Lady Ilife revived Basildon Park, restoring and refurnishing it to its original splendour. In due course, they donated the house and grounds to The National Trust in the hope that future generations would delight in what came very close to being destroyed.
