The 19th century Italianate mansion perches high on cliffs overlooking the River Thames.

Cliveden House, the third residence to grace the site, was once the home of Lady Nancy Astor who made modest Taplow the lively hub of political and literary post-War society. Winston Churchill and Rudyard Kipling were both part of 'the Cliveden set', who regularly came to dine and be entertained in the Astor's vast estate.

Today, Cliveden is known for it's extensive series of gardens which sweep the Thames valley overlooking the river below. Each garden has its own unique character ranging from the formal topiary and water gardens to the tranquil glade - or secret - garden. Peaceful woodland paths lead walkers down to the river and back up to the long arcaded terrace which extends beyond the house on both sides. The 18th century octagonal temple, now used as a chapel, features a rich mosaic interior.

Visitors can wander the gardens at leisure but only part of the great mansion, now let as a hotel, is open for viewing.
