Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon in 1599. After being educated at Hutingdon grammar school, now the site of the Cromwell Museum, he made his living by farming and collecting rents in Huntingdon and then St Ives. Up until 1640, he played only a small role in local administration and no significant role in antional politics. This all changed, however, during the civil wars of the 1640s which brought Cromwell to power.

The Cromwell Museum interprets the life of Cromwell, his rise during the civil wars and also when he became Lord Protector in 1653. The museum homes a huge collection of Cromwell material, many that were once owned by him.

Thereare alsoa wide range of books and souvenirs for sale.
