Ellesmere Port

Narrow boat on the Shropshire Union Canal

Ellesmere Port is located in beautiful Cheshire, a county famous for being home to numerous north west footballers.

But Ellesmere Port needs no endorsement by shopaholic WAGS or their premier league partners; it has achieved fame with the boating fraternity simply by virtue of its two striking canals and the National Waterways Museum.

That said, weekends and bank holidays see serious shoppers and bargain hunters descend on Ellesmere Port and the designer labels on offer at Cheshire Oaks Shopping Village. A few miles further north lies the Boat Museum – a Mecca for waterway enthusiasts from far and wide. Locals too can admire the vast display of historic boats and learn more about life on the canals in the 18th century.

The Manchester Ship Canal, the ‘big ditch’, skirts the northern side of Ellesmere Port, while the Shropshire Union Canal runs southwards through the suburb of Wolverham all the way to Chester and beyond. Take a stroll along the towpath into town on the fourth Saturday of every month and buy your local produce fresh from the farmer’s market.
