Winsford Flashes
Cheshire
Winsford Bottom Flash is a large lake on the River Weaver, immediately beyond the southernmost limit of navigation. It is a popular spot for sailing (01606 592726) and coarse fishing (01606 538475) - mostly for carp and bream. Although beyond British Waterways jurisdiction, canal boats can slip under Winsford Bridge and out into the lake - although care is required since it is deceptively shallow in places. Navigation beyond the Flash is not possible.
The River Weaver was originally canalised as far as Winsford Bridge to allow specially-built flat-bottomed boats to transport salt from the town's works to Liverpool.
Winsford Top Flash is a smaller lake, higher on the River Weaver, which can be seen immediately next to the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, west at Bridge 22, though there is no communication between the river and the canal.
