Image for Townend

Townend is a wonderful example of Lakeland architecture, with tall chimneys, slate roof and lime rendered stonework. The house is situated near to the quaint village of Troutbeck, close to Windermere and Ambleside.

The house is full of interesting carved woodwork, many books, papers and furniture which gives visitors a charming look into what life was like for the Browne family, wealthy yeoman farmers, who owned the house from 1626 to 1943. The house was donated to the National Trust in 1943.

The small Edwardian garden has also been recreated for visitors to admire.
