The museum is situated on a old sand wharf site where barges used to unload gravel that had been dredged from the bed of the lake. This process came to an end in 1975 and during 1976 - 77, the site was acquired by the Windermere Nautical Trust who built the museum with the help of the Maritime Trust and the English Tourist Board.

Today, the museum plays host to one of the finest steamboat collections in the world. Described as an all-weather attraction, the museum has a historic collection of steam and motor boats, steam launch trips, 'Swallows and Amazons' exhibition, 'Model Boats: You too can do it' exhibition and a shop and refreshments. There is also a picnic area, a model boat pond, a large car park and disabled facilities.

Cruises are often available, although this is dependent upon the weather.

The museum is open from 16th March to 27th October from 10:00 - 17:00.
