Chesterfield
The scenic Chesterfield Canal (or Cuckoo Dyke) begins in the historic town of Chesterfield.
A market town since the thirteenth century, Chesterfield still plays host to an extensive tri-weekly market which sees bargain hunters from all over Derbyshire flocking to the town centre. Outside of the county limits, Chesterfield is best know for the crooked spire of its church – which can be seen for miles around.
The Chesterfield Canal runs from just outside Chesterfield train station, through Worksop to meet the River Trent at West Stockwith.
Unfortunately, most of the stretch from Chesterfield is unnavigable – but the initial four miles from the centre have been restored and trip boats now operate from here. Walkers can explore the Cuckoo Way or simply use the path of the canal as a scenic walking route towards Whittington, enjoying a canalside pint at The Mill en-route.
