Opened in 1994, Chesterfield Museum is a testament to the town's long and important social and industrial history, from its beginnings as a Roman fort until the present day. Its most impressive exhibit is the original 7 metre high, builders' windlass which was used in the construction of Chesterfield Parish Church ('The Crooked Spire') all the way back in the 14th century. There are examples of excavations of Roman ruins from the town centre, and artefacts from its coal-mining, engineering and pottery past.

On show too are packaging and products from Robinson & Sons Ltd, a local manufacturer with nationwide acclaim, and the art gallery houses work by local artist Joseph Syddall (1864-1942).

The museum is located in the 1879 Stephenson Memorial Hall, named after the famous railway pioneer and local resident, George Stephenson.
