There were once about 2000 roundhouses in the country, which were locomotive engine sheds and big enough to turn steam locomotives. Sadly the end of thegolden age of steam brought an end to these structures, which were rapidly demolished and today of which only a handful survive.

This one at Barrow Hill, Chesterfield owes its survival mainly to the hard efforts from the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society ('BHESS') and Chesterfield Borough Council.

If you are the proudowner of a locomotive you are welcome to join the society for a small annual fee. Members of the public are welcome to visit and taste a piece of engineering history on an Open Day. Please contact the BHESS for more details.
