Bugsworth Basin began in 1796 as a key transhipment point between the Peak Forest Canal and its tramways for the transport of limestone from quarries around Buxton to Manchester. It quickly grew to become one of the largest ports on the English canal network.

Today, it is a world class site of industrial archaeology, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and the only remaining interchange between a narrow canal and a tramway. Restoration was begun by volunteers of the Inland Waterway Protection Society (IWPS) some 30 years ago, and culminated in reopening to boats over Easter 2005.

Also on the Bugsworth Basin site is the Navigation Inn pub which offers food, real ales and accommodation (01663 732072).
