The Gibside estate was once home to the Queen Mother's family - the Bowes-Lyons. The ruined hall was built in 1620 and in the 18th century, a statue of British Liberty was built, as was an orangery, banqueting hall and chapel. The garden was also landscaped around the same time.
Gibside is home to many miles of walks, both along the river and also through the woodland. The area is currently under restoration by the National Trust.
