Rainham, Wennington and Aveley Marsh was the first reserve to be situated within the environment of a large urban area.

The reserve extends for 871 acres. The site surrounds the Cleanaway landfill site and is bounded by the A13 on its northern edge and the River Thames on its southern edge.

The RSPB has embarked upon an extensive program of recreating this historic medieval marshland to its former glory by clearing and re-digging ditches to make it a desirable stopover and nesting ground for many different species of wild birds both native and visiting.

Rainham Marshes currently has a network of nature trails, which are used for guided walks and events, as well as more than 3.5 miles of nature boardwalks designed for wheelchair and pushchair access.
