Dundas Aqueduct

Gloucestershire

Image for Dundas Aqueduct

This fabulous aqueduct designed by John Rennie is one of two such important structures on the Kennet & Avon Canal, the other being at Avoncliff. It is regarded as his finest architectural achievement. The grace of his three-arch construction built in 1804 is best appreciated by leaving the canal and walking down to the valley below.

Here also is the junction between the Kennet & Avon Canal and the largely derelict Somerset Coal Canal. The short stretch of the Somerset in water forms Brassknocker Basin, and here there is a cafe, shop, and the full range of boating facilities. In the villages of Monkton Combe (0.3 miles) and Limpley Stoke (0.7 miles) there are pubs, restaurants and hotel accommodation.
