Greywell Tunnel

Hampshire

The collapsed 1230 yard Greywell Tunnel now marks the westernmost navigation limit of the Basingstoke Canal. A major engineering achievement, the tunnel is the second longest in southern England.

Some 800 yards of the tunnel from the eastern end up to the 200 yard-long roof collapse is in water. Following the discovery in 1985 of a colony of bats, the tunnel has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a locked gate has been installed preventing access and to conserve the tunnel as a winter hibernation and breeding habitat.

Blubeckers Mill House Restaurant is nearby. Greywell is a previous winner of the Best Kept Hampshire Village.
