This wetland reserve by the River Lee is home to some of the most graceful and beautiful birds Britain has to offer, such as the kingfisher and the kestrel.
It is a favourite destination amongst walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and photographers, and its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere make it especially popular with families.
Rye Meads’ 10 bird hides ensure that it’s one of the best reserves to come to for those new to bird watching, giving visitors the chance to get up close to birds in their natural habitat.
Children can borrow Explorer Backpacks on arrival and take part in bird-related games and quizzes, helping them to understand more about wildlife and the environment. Rye Meads follows a large programme of events throughout the year; hosting such things as guided walks and family fun days, which means it’s a great place to bring small children.
However, the picnic areas and picturesque surroundings create an idyllic haven that’s also perfect for adults looking to relax, especially during the summer months.
Rye Meads offers many nature trails that are accessible to wheelchair users, and entry to the whole reserve is free.
