Inverness
The capital of the Highlands, Inverness is a pretty town which is ideally located for touring the Caledonian Canal and its famous lochs.
Overlooking the River Ness, Inverness Castle has dominated the Highland town for centuries. Follow the direct course of the Caledonian Canal to explore another romantic fortress - Castle Urquhart was once one of the biggest in Scotland and even today it would be hard to beat its dramatic position, perched on a rocky outcrop jutting into Loch Ness. Numerous ‘Nessie’ sightings have been made from here – but should you fail to spot the elusive monster, you can always make do with the rather convincing replica at the Loch Ness Centre.
Walking to work in Inverness
The River Ness strides through Inverness; a scenic highway for walkers and cyclists keen to avoid the rush hour traffic. The river is within convenient reach of the station, so commuters can also take a waterside stroll to offices near Bank Street.
Days out by the canal
Slightly north, the Caledonian Canal flows through playing fields and recreation grounds in Dalneigh and Kinmylies – an easy-to-follow route for joggers and cyclists.
