The original wooden castle at Tonbridge was built by one of William the Conqueror's noblemen after the Battle of Hastings. The present structure dates back to the 13th Century and stands in 14 acres of spectacular landscaped gardens overlooking the River Medway.

The grounds are free of charge to the public and visitors can wander at their leisure along the trail that winds around the motte and bailey site. Thanks to local council funding, visitors can now also enjoy a circular tour of the ground and first floor levels of the gatehouse. Exhibition areas give you intimate insights into what life would have been like in the castle. Audio tours are available in English, French, German and Dutch. Wheelchair access to the gatehouse is limited to the ground floor only.

A pleasure boat operates from Castle Lawn providing one hour and 30 minute return trips down the river.
