Maidstone's Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages, housed in the medieval stables of the Archbishops' Palace, contains an outstanding collection of vehicles including royal state carriages, horse drawn sledges, governess carts and gigs and miniature carriages that once belonged to Queen Victoria.
This collection was started by Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake, a twelve-time Mayor of Maidstone, and was the first collection of its kind in Britain when it opened in 1946.
