In the 1870's the Corporation of Liverpool encountered a problem. Their art collection had become too large to be housed in the Free Public Library and more space was urgently needed to showcase the popular Autumn Exhibitions. The obvious solution was to build a new gallery, but local ratepayers were not keen to foot the bill themselves. Thankfully, they never had to. Shortly after his election as Mayor, A.B. Walker heroically offered to bear all costs himself, and then to present the new gallery to the town. The Walker Art Gallery opened it's doors in 1877.
Now lauded the National Gallery of the North, the Walker holds some of the most admired fine and decorative art in Europe. Works by Gainsborough, Lowry, Rembrandt and Rossetti hang in the hallowed halls, which also boast beautiful period furniture, silk wall hangings and marble sculpture.
