Leicestershire is indeed the county of the inland waterways – with the River Soar and the Grand Union Canal running directly though the county town of Leicester.

Leicester is a colourful destination which blends historic architecture with vibrant street markets and some of the best curries in the country. The towpath of the Grand Union Canal Leicester Line provides a scenic alternative to the numerous A roads heading into the city: one day a week, why not take a break from queuing traffic and walk or cycle to work instead? Fancy a breath of fresh air? Follow the winding path of the Soar to its rural upper reaches and admire the enchanting countryside which, amazingly, lies just outside the bustle of the city.

Elsewhere, the Grand Union Leicester Line runs to historic Foxton Locks – the perfect spot for a day out in Leicestershire’s rolling hills.
