Mainly because of its short actual working life, Moira Furnace is one of the best examples of an early19th century blast furnace anywhere in Europe. It's now a scheduled ancient monument, including limekilns and the canal wharf.

Also at the sympathetically maintained 120-acre site is the new Conkers Discovery Centre (01283 216633) - which includes wild flower meadow, woodland plantation walk, sculpture trail, assault course, amphitheatre and two lakeside restaurants. At Moira there is a short mile-long section of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal now restored to water and boat trips are available.

Nearby: Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle (01530 413343), Bluebell Arboretum, Measham Pottery, Donington Grand Prix Racing Circuit & Museum (01332 811027).
