Bosworth Field
Leicestershire
Visitors to this quiet part of Leicestershire might not imagine that one of the bloodiest battles in English history took place here.
But the Battle of Bosworth Field, the final chapter in the Wars of the Roses, was fought right here in countryside now crossed by the Ashby Canal. On 22nd August 1485, Henry Tudor defeated Richard III ("Richard of York") to become King.
Widely blamed for the death of the Princes in the Tower, Richard was not a popular king. During the battle, 4,000 of his approximately 12,000-strong force deserted him to join Henry Tudor, giving Henry the upper hand. Richard's troops were struck with fear by this development, and the King himself died in a last-ditch attempt to kill Henry.
One of the most enduring stories in English history is now retold at the Visitor Centre on the site. You can explore the historic site and even take a train ride on the neighbouring Battlefield Line, which runs parallel to the Ashby Canal.
