Lincoln was the third city of the realm in prosperity and importance by Norman times, and it was in 1068, two years after the Battle of Hastings, when William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle on a site occupied since Roman times.

It was the focus of many battles in the ensuing centuries, but for the past 900 years it has been used as a court and prison - its Crown Court function continuing today.

Many original features still remain and the wall walks provide visitors with magnificent views of the Cathedral, the City of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside.

Interesting facts are that Lincoln houses one of the only four surviving originals of the Magna Carta. There is an exhibition central to the Magna Carta where you can actually see the original. Also, Lincoln and Lewes castles are the only two in Britain with two mottes.
