Myddelton House was the home of E. A. Bowles (1865 - 1954) who devoted much of his life to the creation of the grand garden. Bowles was an extremely enthusiastic collector and a plant enthusiast, and even discovered and selected many plants, especially unusual varieties. Visitors can still see some of his plants in the garden some of which visitors can still see in the garden today.

The splendid garden, unfortunately, fell into disrepair after Bowles' death and some of the extraordinary plants were lost. The Lee Valley Park and the E.A. Bowles of Myddelton House Society, however, have been tenderly restoring the 4-acre garden since 1984, so visitors can enjoy the splendour that it once had.

The National Collection of award-winning Bearded Iris also have their home at the gardens.

In 1992, the E.A. Bowles of Myddelton House Society formed, with the intention of promoting both the knowledge and appreciation of E.A. Bowles and the garden he was so dedicated to at Myddelton House. The registered charity helps to restore and maintain the garden in the unique style of Bowles.
