Falkirk
A great location between two of Scotland’s largest cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Falkirk lies at the junction of the Union and Forth & Clyde canals.
Head to The Falkirk Wheel and take a boat trip on this amazing piece of engineering, taking in the views of the surrounding scenery. Opened by the HM the Queen in 2002, the unique Wheel is the centrepiece of the ‘Millennium Link’ – the UK’s largest restoration project.
After your trip, head to the café where you can enjoy a warm drink and something to eat. Shopping is a must on a visit to Falkirk, home to Scotland’s only fully pedestrianised High Street crammed with shops to suit every need. The High Street also plays host to its own radio station - Central FM. Pay the Farmers’ Market a visit – it takes place on the High Street on the second Sunday of each month.
Falkirk is home to a variety of pubs where you can sit to your heart’s content and enjoy some local hospitality while watching the many boats cruise by on their way to the famous Wheel. Pay a visit to The Wheelhouse, a bar and restaurant where you can sample some tasty Scottish delights, like Haggis and Black Pudding Gateau. The delicious and reasonably priced food is complemented by a wonderful view through the panoramic windows of The Falkirk Wheel. Wander around the Wheel’s Visitor Centre before making your way to the Union Inn for a beverage of your choice while sitting in the beer garden and watching the canal flow by. If the weather isn’t up for an evening in the beer garden, head to the Canal Inn and take a pew by the roaring log fire.
Falkirk is also home to a branch of the Seagull Trust charity who run boat trips daily between the months of April and October. If you wish to find out more about booking a trip with the Seagull Trust click here.
