Cycling near Kirkintilloch

Cycling on the towpath of the Forth & Clyde at Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. PIC:PAUL TOMKINS/VisitScotland/SCOTTISH VIEWPOINT

There are two reasons why towpath cycling is such a great way to get around the Lowlands.

For one thing, canal towpaths cross some of the most stunning scenery Scotland has to offer; for the other, they are (almost) entirely flat.

The towpaths of the Forth & Clyde were restored with cycling in mind. Pedal from Dalmuir to Bowland – and then continue along the [Glasgow to Loch Lomond cycleway and explore the network of nearby forest trails. If this sounds far too energetic, you can hire your bikes from Luss and take a relaxing ride along the purpose-built cycle path north to Firkin Point and Tarbet. Alternatively, head south to the shores of Loch Lomond.
The River Tay winds through stunning scenery and interesting woodlands, and cycling along it will no doubt take your breath away. A section of the National Cycle Network follows the route of the Tay.
