Kelvin Aqueduct
Lowlands
When construction of the Forth & Clyde Canal recommenced in 1785, Robert Whitworth replaced John Smeaton as engineer. Whitworth designed what was then the largest aqueduct in Britain, the Kelvin Aqueduct, built between 1787 and 1790. 122m (400ft) long and 21.3m (70ft) high, it cost £8,500 - £2,000 over budget.
The best way to appreciate the majesty of this aqueduct is to walk down to the River Kelvin. Steps run from the canal towpath down to the Kelvin Walkway.
