Port Dundas
Lowlands
Port Dundas was the port established in the heart of Glasgow to link the city to the Forth & Clyde Canal, via a short canal arm. The Forth & Clyde Canal connects east and west coasts, as well as linking Glasgow to Edinburgh.
The site is not currently accessible by boat due to an obstruction in the historic navigation, though there are proposals to reinstate the water link. Boats can, however, reach the attractive old Canal Company offices at Spiers Wharf, a short distance away and the current terminus of the canal's Glasgow Arm. The port itself will be of great interest to industrial archaeology enthusiasts.
Named 1990 European City of Culture, 1999 UK City of Architecture & Design and now 2003 European Capital of Sport, Glasgow is on something of a roll. It boasts world famous art and museum collections, tremendous Victorian cityscapes, some of the best shopping to be found anywhere outside of London and great entertainment and night life. It welcomes over two million visitors every year. (For tourist information, call 0141 204 4400.)
