Singers

Kilbowie Road
Lowlands

In 1885, sewing machine manufacturers Singers relocated from Bridgeton in Glasgow to a new factory at Kilbowie Road in Clydebank. The factory became the biggest concern not only on the canal, but in the world!

At its peak in 1913 the factory produced over 1,300,00 sewing machines with a workforce of 14,000. Even the canal had gold in it! Someone emptied a tank of fish into the canal which prospered in the warm water from the Singers works outflow.
