Threave Castle

First recorded in 1400, Threave Castle is set in the middle of the Scottish River Dee, in Dumfries and Galloway. The island on which the castle is now built has gradually grown, due to the water levels, although in the winter months, rising water levels make visiting the castle practically impossible. The romance of the island castle is further established by the bell that visitors have to ring from the river bank, when a custodian will then ferry them across the water.
It is believed that the castle was built some time after the third Earl of Douglas, Archibald “The Grim became Lord of Galloway in 1369. His family lived there for generations until the power of the Douglas' was destroyed by King James II in the mid 1400's.
