This unusual Georgian property occupies a prime elevated position overlooking Monmouth, the picturesque Wye Valley and the Usk plain. On most days the sweeping views extend to the Black Mountain and the Sugarloaf hillside in the background.

Groups journeying up to Kymin to picnic in this favourite wooded spot are following in the footsteps of the local gentry who, in the 18th century, were in the habit of meeting here on Tuesdays for open-air lunch parties. It is cheering to note that the weather was as unpredictable then as it is today and in 1794, 80 guineas was put forward for the creation of a small banqueting "house as security from the inclemency of the weather".

It was thought vital that none of the advantages of the position were lost through the move in-doors, and the Round House boasts views of 10 of the old counties through its five windows, as well as a telescope fixed onto the flat roof. The circular building was joined in 1801 by the Naval Temple which stands as a monument to the glory of the British Navy and Lord Nelson. Both properties were donated to the National Trust in 1902.
